Month: June 2016
As we go about our busy lives, it is helpful to have ways to enjoy ourselves and to soothe ourselves.
Soothing is an anti-dote to fear, upset, and general unsettledness.
We know negative emotions pass, but perhaps we can help them along their way…
Favourite programmes – there’s nothing better than watching a programme you know inside out. A mini trip down memory lane, by the end hopefully your mood will have picked up. I highly recommend Dawson’s Creek, Sex and the City or Friends 😉
Talking – a quick chat can work wonders. You don’t have to suffer alone; sometimes just having someone say “that must be hard” or “I understand where you’re coming from” can validate your emotions and lighten your load. Sometimes a chat completely unrelated to how you’re feeling helps too – it really is good to talk 🙂
Hugs – they have been proven to release oxytocin in the brain; a chemical that makes us feel good and lowers our stress levels. So not only are they a comforting, sign of love and affection, they are good for our health too! #winwin
Home-cooked family meals – dinners or meals that remind you of happy times and shared memories; the smell wafting from the kitchen can chill you out in seconds 🙂 One of the classics I remember is not a typical roast, it’s a Chinese chicken recipe. Delicious.
Music – you can find the soundtrack to any mood in this digital age. Have a cry with Adele, sing along to Taylor Swift or dance away to Beyoncé. Certain songs throw me back to sixth form and university nights out. Good ol’ nostalgia – thanks to Fatman Scoop and Justin Timberlake 😉
Places – I’m lucky to have several places I feel at home in, sometimes just seeing my hometown on a road sign is good. Often comforting places have comforting people who live there, or you have memories there. Sometimes it the “place” could be wherever a loved one is. My friends and I meet in all sorts of random places, but the fact we’re together is soothing 🙂 Where is your happy place?
Photographs – Photos of happy holidays, fun trips, nights out, beautiful scenery, and candid moments – very enjoyable! One of my favourite photos of my sister is in my grandma’s kitchen. Simply gorgeous & smiley 💘 Thank goodness for photos!
Extras – sugary goodness and the occasional spot of retail therapy can do the trick too. In moderation…
What comforting things do you like to do?
